Blackwater Creek Koi Farms is a leading producer of Butterfly Koi. We produce over 500,000 per year in this variety alone. Most of the certified breeds are available in butterfly. All fish sold at Blackwater Creek are produced here on the farm.

The Butterfly koi are koi. Some people had once thought that they were produced by crossing goldfish with koi. This is not the case. Some of the original butterfly koi were produced by one of our partners (and friends) in Niigata, Japan. He used an Indonesian long fin carp to cross with his kohaku and showa to IMPROVE their body shape~ Yes, this is contrary to many teachings but is true. Some of the offspring looked bad, like a carp, and others looked like the "good parent". Some had long fins, some short and a few had beautiful colors and patterns along with long flowing fins. They tried to sell these fish for a few years and then stopped producing them in 1993 because the market had not developed yet. His short finned showa did go on to win many prizes in the All Japan Koi Shows and this bloodline is still being produced.
